Professional Tree Care & Maintenance in Toronto

Professional Tree Care & Maintenance in Toronto

Toronto faces many unique challenges, from the devastating effects of the Emerald Ash Borer in our ash canopy, Spongy Moth, and Dutch Elm Disease, to invasive species like Tree of Heaven and European Buckthorn crowding tight residential lots. Add in unpredictable ice storms, heavy snow loads, soil compaction against close property lines, and branches growing into hydro lines, and it is clear that Toronto tree care requires true expertise.

Most of this work is close-quarters and must be done precisely, which is exactly what we do. To address these complex needs, we offer a comprehensive suite of tree services tailored for Toronto property owners. Whether your landscape requires safe Tree Removal, structural Tree Pruning and Trimming, detailed Arborist Services, proactive Tree Health assessments, or rapid 24/7 Emergency Services, our team is fully equipped to protect and enhance your urban canopy.

Damage & Risk Assessment

Toronto Permits – What Applies to Your Tree Removal

In Toronto, private tree care and removal are governed by strict municipal bylaws to protect the city’s urban canopy. If a tree measures 30 cm (12 inches) or more in diameter at breast height, or sits within a Ravine Protection Area, you must apply to Urban Forestry for a permit before it can be removed or significantly pruned. While dead or imminently hazardous trees may be exempt, their condition requires professional documentation before any work begins.

Tree Removal

Ellipse

When a tree is dead, severely diseased, structurally compromised, or outgrowing its space, removal becomes necessary to protect your property. Removing a hazardous tree eliminates safety risks and frees up valuable space and sunlight for the rest of your landscape. Loyal Tree approaches full removals with precision rigging and careful dismantling, ensuring safe execution even in Toronto’s most difficult, close-quarters residential lots.

Regular pruning is essential when a tree’s branches interfere with roofs, power lines, or neighboring properties, or when the canopy becomes too dense. Proper structural and maintenance pruning keeps your trees healthy, improves air circulation, and enhances the overall aesthetic of your yard. We use industry-best techniques to make strategic cuts that promote long-term vitality while keeping your property safe and clear.

Overgrown hedges and shrubs can quickly look unkempt, block valuable sunlight, and encroach on walkways or sightlines. Timely shaping and size reduction maintain clean property lines, encourage dense foliage, and significantly boost your home’s curb appeal. Loyal Tree provides meticulous trimming services, focusing on precise aesthetics and plant health to give your landscape a beautifully manicured finish.

If a mature, valuable tree develops structural weaknesses, such as a split trunk or heavy overextended branches, it may require physical support rather than removal. Cabling and bracing reduce the risk of catastrophic failure during high winds or heavy snow, preserving the tree you love. Our arborists install discreet, high-grade hardware designed to stabilize the tree’s structure while allowing for natural movement and growth.

When you’ve removed an old tree or simply want to enhance your property’s canopy, professional planting ensures your new addition thrives from day one. Choosing the right tree for Toronto’s specific soil conditions and tight spaces prevents future root issues and maximizes environmental benefits. Loyal Tree guides you in selecting the ideal species and uses proper planting techniques to give your new tree the best possible start.

After a tree is cut down, the remaining stump can be an eyesore, a tripping hazard, or a breeding ground for pests and fungi. Grinding stumps below grade allows you to reclaim that space for a new lawn, garden bed, or patio space. We use specialized, low-impact stump grinding equipment to efficiently remove the stump and surface roots with minimal disruption to your surrounding landscape.

Official documentation is often required by the City of Toronto for construction projects, bylaw permit applications, or tree-condition assessments. A professional report accurately documents the health and structural integrity of your trees, preventing costly delays and bylaw fines. Our ISA Certified Arborists provide thorough, precise reports that meet all municipal standards, ensuring your project moves forward smoothly.

Severe weather, ice storms, or sudden decay can cause trees or massive limbs to fail without warning, immediately threatening homes, vehicles, and power lines. A rapid response is critical to safely clear the hazard, prevent further property damage, and restore your peace of mind. Loyal Tree maintains a dedicated emergency team equipped to handle dangerous, high-tension storm damage at any hour, prioritizing your safety above all else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my Toronto property?

If the tree is 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height (measured 1.4 m up), yes. Under Chapter 813 you need a permit from Urban Forestry. And if your property is in a Ravine Protection Area, you need a permit for *any* tree regardless of size. We measure the tree, confirm which rule applies, and handle the application.

Fines run from $500 to $100,000 per tree, plus mandatory replanting costs. It’s not worth the risk — we sort the permit before any cutting starts.

Dead or imminently hazardous trees are exempt, but you want that condition documented. We provide an ISA Certified Arborist report recording the tree’s state before removal so the exemption is on record.

Both. We write the arborist report and manage the Urban Forestry permit application, then do the removal.
